Purse BASH
Benefits the Moon Township Police Department
Moon Township Police have officially relaunched their mountain bike patrol program on the Montour Trail, starting on July 4, 2025, after a 20-year hiatus. This program aims to increase officer visibility, deter crime, improve response times to emergencies, and foster community policing by allowing officers to engage directly with trail users. The patrol covers portions of the trail within Moon Township and is a response to increased trail usage, though officials have also cited the prior fatal stabbing on the trail in October 2024 as a factor in prioritizing safety on the trail.
Why the Program Was Relaunched
- Increased Trail Use:
The Montour Trail is very popular with bikers, runners, and walkers, creating a need for a visible presence.
- Faster Response Times:
Bike patrols can reach areas that are inaccessible to patrol cars, especially since the trail has locked gates that slow down vehicle response.
- Community Safety:
Following the fatal stabbing of an officer on the trail in October 2024, the need for greater safety and security on the trail became a priority.
- Historical Context:
The program had been underfunded and was discontinued in the past, but has been a topic of discussion for the department for years, according to the West Hills Gazette.
This has been aired by WTAE, WPXI, and CBS. This Charity event will help raise funds to provide the required bikes needed by these officers and supplies.
